The degree of association between LDL cholesterol levels and risk for a first adverse cardiovascular (CV) event in older populations is uncertain. Using data from four prospective cohort studies (e.g., Framingham), researchers examined this question in 2700 older participants (age, ≥75) with no history of CV disease.
In both unadjusted and adjusted analyses, researchers found no significant association between LDL cholesterol levels and 5-year incidence of adverse CV events. The lack of association between LDL cholesterol levels and CV events also was noted when cohorts with no other risk factors and cohorts with other risk factors (e.g., smoking, hypertension, diabetes) were examined separately.
