Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are at increased risk for colorectal cancer, but data on the progression from low-grade dysplasia (LGD) to advanced neoplasia are scarce.
To better understand the natural history of LGD in this setting, investigators in the Netherlands identified 4284 patients in a nationwide network and registry of histopathology and cytopathology who were diagnosed with LGD between 1991 and 2010.
At median follow-up of 6.4 years, 38% of patients developed recurrent LGD. Patients with versus without recurrent LGD at first follow-up colonoscopy had higher risk for advanced neoplasia (hazard ratio, 1.66; P=0.001).
