Enterobacteriaceae that produce carbapenemase are among the most resistant and lethal pathogens. Class B carbapenemases are metallo-β-lactamases (MBLs) that require zinc ions for activity. However, in animal infection models with MBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae that had exhibited carbapenem resistance in vitro, carbapenems have exhibited potent activity; moreover, patients infected with such pathogens have been treated successfully with carbapenems.
