Altered serum iron parameters, such as transferrin, ferritin, and iron, have been associated with hepatic injury and are routinely elevated in patients with acute alcoholic hepatitis. However, it is unclear if they predict mortality.
To study this issue, researchers analyzed data from patients with alcoholic hepatitis enrolled in a prospective trial. Iron parameters obtained included ferritin, iron, and transferrin. For the current substudy, these patients were randomly assigned to an exploratory cohort (n=200) and validation cohort (n=628) with the goal of testing the ability of iron parameters to predict 28- and 90-day mortality.
