Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) can result in a very narrowed esophagus leading to significant dysphagia. To add to the sparse literature on treatment outcomes in these patients, investigators conducted a retrospective chart review at one tertiary center.
Among 1091 patients identified with EoE, 66 (6%) met study criteria for severe stenosis (esophageal diameter ≤10 mm). Treatment comprised different combinations of esophageal dilation, use of proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs), use of topical steroids, dietary therapy, and clinical trial drugs. The most frequently used therapies were dilation (99%) and PPIs (92%).
