The WHO has called for cervical cancer's elimination (defined as ≤4 cases per 100,000 women-years globally). To estimate the potential impact of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination and cervical screening with HPV assays on cervical cancer incidence and mortality, researchers modelled the effects of the following interventions in 78 lower- and middle-income countries (LMIC):
Girls-only HPV immunization at age 9 with catch-up in the first year to age 14
HPV immunization of girls plus 1 lifetime cervical screening at age 35
HPV immunization of girls plus 2 lifetime screenings at ages 35 and 45
