The 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS) is estimated to occur in one of 3000 to 4000 live births. Although the syndrome is rare in schizophrenia (0.1%–0.3% of patients with schizophrenia), it occurs much more frequently in these patients than in the general population, with studies reporting 9 to 20 times greater frequency. Psychosis occurs in up to one in four patients with 22q11.2DS. To explore what 22q11.2DS might reveal about subcortical abnormalities contributing to schizophrenia and other psychoses, investigators utilized MRI, genetic, and clinical data from 533 individuals with 22q11.2DS (mean age, 18; female, 52%; mean IQ, 75; psychotic disorder, 14%) and 330 age-matched healthy controls.
