The advent of biologic agents has revolutionized the care of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Unfortunately, response is not universal. Because different biologics target different inflammatory pathways, there is a possibility that combination therapy could increase the response rate. However, few data are available.
Investigators at the Mayo Clinic retrospectively reviewed outcomes in 15 patients (14 with Crohn disease, 1 with ulcerative colitis) who received combination biologic therapy. All patients had worsening luminal disease on a single biologic agent. A second biologic, to which patients were treatment-naive, was then added.
