As COVID-19 nears pandemic status we need an understanding of its clinical spectrum. Researchers at a national Chinese research center analyzed data on 1099 inpatients and outpatients (median age, 47; 58% male; 3.5% healthcare workers) with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 diagnosed at 552 hospitals in China between December 11, 2019, and January 29, 2020.
The median incubation period, determinable for 291 patients, was 4.0 days. Axillary temperature >37.5°C occurred at presentation in 44% of cases and developed during hospitalization in 89%. Cough (68%), fatigue (38%), and sputum production (34%) were the other most frequent symptoms; shortness of breath (19%), sore throat (14%) and nasal congestion (5%) were uncommon.
