Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is associated with healthcare-seeking behavior and patient anxiety over the possibility of underlying organic disease and shortened lifespan. In a population-based study in Sweden, investigators used a nationwide histopathology register to assess the risk for death in individuals with IBS undergoing a colorectal biopsy. The cohort included over 45,000 people, who were matched by age and sex with up to 5 individuals from the general population. A secondary analysis included 41,000 individuals with IBS who did not undergo colorectal biopsy. Results were as follows:
