Hundreds of millions of women around the world have used copper intrauterine devices (IUDs), yet some patients and clinicians have noted room for improvement. To facilitate ease of placement, a novel IUD has been designed that has precut threads and is preloaded in a narrow-diameter applicator with a tapered, rounded tip. The frame includes nitinol (an elastic nickel-titanium alloy), and the copper portions are located only where they will be close to the cornua and the cervical internal os; thus, this IUD has a substantially lower total copper load, which may reduce copper-associated cramping and bleeding.
