NEJM Journal Watch General Medicine recently published a review of a trial from Spain, in which hypertensive patients were randomized to taking their blood pressure medications either first thing in the morning or at bedtime. The results — nearly 50% fewer adverse cardiovascular events at 6 years in the bedtime group — seemed almost too good to be true. To dig more deeply into this trial and its implications for practicing clinicians, NEJM Journal Watch General Medicine Editor-in-Chief Dr. Allan Brett interviewed Dr. Raymond Townsend, a well-known hypertension researcher at the University of Pennsylvania.
