Investigators now report a rare case of HIV transmission in 2017 between two hospitalized patients, based on sequence analysis and epidemiologic clues.
A young male patient without known risk factors for HIV (patient A) was diagnosed with acute HIV infection 12 days after being discharged from the hospital. He had had a negative HIV test 99 days prior to his diagnosis and subsequently started hemodialysis for chronic kidney disease.
Because the timing of his transmission event most likely fell during his hospitalization, a review of all patients with known HIV in the hospital or hemodialysis unit at the same time as patient A was performed.
