Roughly 5% of high school students have had a sexual photo shared electronically without their consent in the past month, according to findings from a 2017 survey in JAMA Pediatrics.
Nearly 8700 U.S. high-schoolers across four urban areas answered the following question: “During the past 30 days, had a revealing sexual photo of you been texted, emailed, or posted electronically without your permission?” Among the other findings:
Sexual-minority boys were more likely than heterosexual boys to respond yes (18% vs. 4%); the same held true for sexual-minority versus heterosexual girls (7% vs. 4%).
Having a sexual photo shared was associated with dating violence, being bullied, feelings of hopelessness, and suicide attempts in the past year.
