To identify trajectories of cognitive aging, researchers analyzed clinicopathological data from two longitudinal cohort studies involving a total of 1010 participants (70% women; mean age at baseline, 80 years; mean education level, 16 years).
Patients underwent annual cognitive testing for a mean of 10 years (maximum 24 years). Neuropathological markers analyzed at autopsy (mean age at time of death, 90 years) included Alzheimer disease (AD); Lewy body disease (LBD); transactive response DNA-binding protein 43 (TDP-43); hippocampal sclerosis; and vascular pathologies, such as atherosclerosis, arteriosclerosis, gross infarcts, microinfarcts, and cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA).
