Disrupted striatal connectivity has been posited as a causal mechanism for the symptoms of schizophrenia. The ventral and dorsal circuity of the striatum are thought to have distinct connectivity to the salience network (SN); with dorsal striatal pathways linked to negative symptoms (e.g., cognitive impairment) and ventral striatal pathways linked to positive symptoms (e.g., psychosis).
