COVID-19 Presentation and Epidemiology in Long-Term Care Facilities

Two articles chronicling emergence of COVID-19 in skilled nursing facilities highlight asymptomatic sources, rapid dissemination, and high mortality.

The first reported case of COVID-19 in the U.S., which involved a recent traveler from China, was reported on January 20, 2020, in Snohomish County, Washington. In late February 2020, an outbreak of COVID-19 in long-term care facilities in King County, Washington, was reported. Now, two articles describe the epidemiology, clinical presentation, and outcomes in two of these facilities.

McMichael and colleagues report results of testing and investigations at one long-term care facility after a resident and a staff member tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 infection (the cause of COVID-19). As of March 18, 2020, they identified as epidemiologically linked a total of 167 confirmed cases involving 101 facility residents (after 118 of 130 were tested)…
