Bystanders are accepted as immediate responders in time-critical emergencies such as choking (Heimlich maneuver) and cardiac arrest (chest compressions and use of automated external defibrillators). The application of direct pressure has been the mainstay of hemorrhage control, but public-access tourniquets and training through the Stop the Bleed initiative may allow bystander care prior to emergency medical services arrival. In two simulation studies, researchers evaluated success of tourniquet application by untrained adult volunteers guided by manufacturer instructions or emergency medical dispatchers.
