Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a disorder of brain-gut interaction and may be associated with psychological comorbidity. Psychological therapies are suggested for severe IBS cases, but their role and relative efficacy are uncertain.
In this systematic review and network meta-analysis, investigators assessed the efficacy of psychological therapies for IBS. Data were from 41 randomized control trials (RCTs) comprising over 4000 patients that compared psychological therapies with each other or a control intervention. The primary outcome was measured as relative risk of having persistent global IBS symptoms or abdominal pain after completion of therapy lasting at least 4 weeks. The results were as follows:
