Misophonia is a condition marked by “hatred of sound.” Typically, it is characterized by sensitivity to another person's chewing, snorting, or performing other repetitive oronasal activities. The resulting irritation, anger, or disgust causes distress and interferes with everyday life. Its precise nature has perplexed clinicians who have ascribed it, variously, to psychiatric, auditory, or neurological causes.
Dutch investigators studied 575 patients referred by general practitioners from 2013 to 2017 (mean age, 34; 69% women). Of the participants, 96% reported being triggered by eating sounds, 85% by nasal or breathing sounds, and 73% by repetitive tapping.
