In four large randomized, controlled trials, sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT-2) inhibitors were associated with fewer adverse renal outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes and either preexisting renal disease or high cardiovascular (CV) risk than were other diabetes drugs. Do SGLT-2 inhibitors have similar effects in routine practice with healthier diabetes patients?
Investigators used national registries in Sweden, Norway, and Denmark to construct two propensity-matched cohorts, each of which contained about 30,000 patients (mean age, 61) who started taking SGLT-2 inhibitors or dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors between 2013 and 2017; 19% of patients had major CV disease, and 3% had chronic kidney disease (CKD).
