Atypical antipsychotic medications are notorious for inducing weight gain and metabolic syndrome. To reduce these effects, psychiatrists are encouraged to prescribe metformin to affected patients. Now, to examine how metformin affects antipsychotic-induced dyslipidemias, investigators have conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of 12 randomized controlled studies (11 rated as high quality) that included 1215 schizophrenia patients who were receiving antipsychotic treatments (mean age, 39).
