In our coverage of the medical literature, NEJM Journal Watch has always placed a premium on selectivity. We typically do not cover “preprints” of articles that have not yet been peer-reviewed. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has placed an extra premium on disseminating and interpreting new research quickly. On occasion, a non–peer-reviewed COVID-19 study underscores or questions the conclusions of peer-reviewed research in an important way. In other instances, a non–peer-reviewed preprint will attract substantial media attention, and we might consider it important to critique the preprint and its associated publicity.
