Computer-aided detection (CADe) systems can help with colorectal neoplasia recognition, but the effect of real-time systems on adenoma detection and other colonoscopy metrics has not been rigorously assessed.
To evaluate the efficacy of a CADe system to detect colorectal neoplasms, investigators conducted a randomized, controlled trial involving 685 patients who underwent colonoscopy for various indications by six experienced endoscopists at three centers in Italy. Patients were assigned to undergo high-definition colonoscopies with CADe or without CADe (controls). The CADe system was a trained and validated convolutional neural network (GI Genius, Medtronic) that recognizes and delineates polyps in the field of view in real time.
