Same-day discharge following minimally invasive surgery is generally cost effective and safe, but evidence is scant regarding the safety of this practice after reconstructive surgery with or without hysterectomy for pelvic organ prolapse. Investigators conducted a retrospective cohort study of such procedures at a California managed care organization from 2008 to 2018. Of >13,400 patients undergoing pelvic reconstructive surgery, 5506 were discharged the same day and 7939 were discharged the next day.
For the entire cohort, rates of 30-day readmission and emergency department (ED) visits were 2.1% and 9.5%, respectively. In adjusted analysis, readmission risk did not differ significantly for women discharged the same day or the following day…
