Over the past 2 decades, the technique and catheters for ablation of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF) have become fairly standardized, with the pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) approach as the standard of care, whether performed with radiofrequency (RF) or cryoballoons. However, these catheters are approved for only for paroxysmal AF ablation.
Researchers in an industry-sponsored, single-arm, investigational device exemption trial (NCT02817776) evaluated a force-sensing catheter for safety and efficacy in 381 patients with persistent AF; the catheter has been approved for paroxysmal AF.
