Many people think that cannabis helps users “chill out” and become less irritable and anxious. To test the validity of this assumption, investigators conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of 30 studies examining the perpetration of physically violent events among adolescents and young adults (mean ages, ≤30) who used cannabis; the studies comprised nearly 300,000 people.
The studies explicitly contained information about acts of physical violence, such as aggravated assault, sexual aggression, and robbery. In analyses adjusted to account for potentially confounding factors, cannabis users were more than twice as likely to commit violence as nonusers.
