There is global awareness of the critical need for duodenoscopes to be reprocessed properly to reduce the risk for patient-to-patient transmission of drug-resistant organisms. In a recent study, investigators at one tertiary center evaluated use of remote video auditing of duodenoscope reprocessing for ensuring fidelity with a manufacturer-recommended disinfection protocol.
Staff conducting offsite video monitoring were trained to recognize and score each step of the reprocessing protocol, which were audited separately and scored as “pass,” “fail,” “process error,” or “unviewable.” A pass score on each audited step was necessary before release of the duodenoscope for use.
