Achalasia is characterized by lack of relaxation of the esophagogastric junction (EGJ) and lack of peristalsis in the body of the esophagus. EGJ outflow obstruction (EGJOO) with preserved esophageal peristalsis is another disorder considered by some to fall within the spectrum of achalasia. In a retrospective study at four expert centers, researchers evaluated the performance of a new 30-mm balloon device for evaluating EGJ relaxation and providing forceful dilation in 51 patients with EGJOO (n=14) or achalasia (n=37). The primary endpoints were clinical success, based on symptom improvement using a validated scale, and adverse events.
