Concussion in elementary school-aged children has received less attention than in older children, who often have sports-related trauma. To address this information deficit, investigators reviewed electronic medical records for a random sample of 292 children aged 5 to 11 years with concussion from 50 primary care practices and emergency departments (EDs) in a Northeastern U.S. children's health system. Among the findings:
Sports-related injury was more common in children aged 9 to 11 than in those aged 5 to 8.
Using a standard postconcussion scale, 96% of children had at least one somatic symptom (headache, dizziness), 38% had altered cognition, and 54% had sleep disturbances.
