Localized, incidentally discovered renal cell carcinomas increasingly are managed with percutaneous ablative procedures (e.g., cryoablation, radiofrequency ablation) rather than surgery. In this study from a U.K. referral center, researchers report outcomes with cryoablation for 185 clinical stage T1 renal cell carcinomas in 180 patients. (Stage T1 criteria are ≤7 cm size, and no evidence of nodal involvement or metastases.) Patients were selected for cryoablation by a multidisciplinary team on the basis of tumor anatomy and patient preferences. Mean tumor size was 2.9 cm (range, 1.1–5.8 cm). Mean follow-up was 28 months (range, 3–63 months).
