SARS-CoV-2 Infection, Comorbidities, and Pregnancy Outcomes

In a large New York City cohort study, maternal BMI ≥30 kg/m² was associated with severe or critical COVID-19, which raised risk for preterm birth.

As the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic continues to spread globally, the impact of COVID-19 on pregnancy must be fully characterized. Investigators studied clinical characteristics and birth outcomes among 241 women with third-trimester, laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection who delivered in New York City from March 13 through April 14, 2020 (median age, 32; 44% Hispanic, 30% non-Hispanic white, 11% non-Hispanic Black, 15% other). In total, 102 women had no viral symptoms at presentation or during labor, delivery, and postpartum course, 46 presented with no viral symptoms but developed symptoms during their hospital stay, and 93 presented with viral symptoms (most commonly cough, fever, or dyspnea); 42% of all women were asymptomatic, 27% had mild …
