Many studies have documented the effectiveness of Internet psychotherapy programs for depression and anxiety, despite substantial levels of suboptimal engagement that can diminish the program's benefits. These researchers employed machine learning to characterize 54,604 patients' use of an 8-module, Internet-based, cognitive-behavioral therapy program for depression and anxiety over a 14-week period.
The analysis identified five patterns of engagement: low engagement with rapid dropout (36%); low engagement with slower dropout (21%); high engagement with rapid disengagement (26%); high engagement with moderate drop-off (6%); and persistently high engagement (11%).
