In the United States, endoscopy staff commonly call patients in the days following an endoscopic procedure to see how they are doing and to detect if any adverse events have occurred. There is no universally agreed upon standard for when or how many times to call. Recently, researchers evaluated whether a novel follow-up protocol after endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) would increase the capture rate of adverse events.
The study included 768 consecutive patients undergoing ERCP during a 12-month period at a single center. Patients were assessed before discharge after the procedure by a physician.
