Some patients with COVID-19 decompensate rapidly and need increasing respiratory support, including invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV). Identifying at-risk inpatients could help ensure that these patients are adequately monitored for decompensation.
Researchers conducted a multicenter, retrospective, cohort study involving 1172 emergency department patients admitted with COVID-19 to develop a prognostic tool — the quick COVID Severity Index (qCSI) — to predict critical respiratory illness within 24 hours of hospital admission.
