Managing ideal and safe blood glucose levels continues to be a challenge in children with type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM1). In this multicenter, industry-sponsored trial, researchers randomized 101 children aged 6 to 13 years with DM1 to a closed-loop insulin delivery system (Tandem Diabetes Care; 78 children) or a glucose sensor and insulin pump (23 children) for 16 weeks.
The mean percentage of time that glucose was in the ideal range (70–180 mg/dL) — the primary outcome — increased from 53% at baseline to 67% over the 16-week study in the closed-loop group, compared with a more modest increase from 51% to 55% in the control group.
