Many patients with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) have concomitant diabetes since it is a significant risk factor for NASH. Metformin is a commonly used agent for the treatment of diabetes; however, the clinical impact of its use in patients with diabetes and NASH-related cirrhosis is unclear.
This was a retrospective cohort study in Veterans Health Administration patients receiving a diagnosis of cirrhosis between 2008 and 2016. Specifically, the cohort comprised patients with cirrhosis and a preexisting diagnosis of diabetes, with or without prior metformin use. The impact of metformin exposure on mortality, hepatic decompensation, and hepatocellular carcinoma was evaluated.
