Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) remains the most complex and high-risk endoscopic intervention, and trainees typically require an entire year of training to perform the procedure safely. In a recent study, researchers examined the value of an ERCP simulator for surgical trainees without prior endoscopy experience.
Twelve surgical trainees were randomized to perform 20 hours of simulated ERCP with coaching or receive no simulator training. Using the simulator, trainees practiced endoscope insertion and positioning, bile duct cannulation, and stent placement. Both groups subsequently received instruction in performing real ERCPs and ultimately participated in performing 150 procedures.
