Slow-transit constipation (STC) is a common disorder, and an association between STC and subsequent Parkinson disease (PD) development exists. However, the few studies assessing long-term complications in patients with STC have inconsistent findings. In the current study, investigators assessed risks for PD, constipation-related surgery, and colorectal cancer in 2165 patients with chronic constipation (including 1254 with STC) who underwent anorectal manometry and colon transit time measurement. Median follow-up was 4.7 years. The results were as follows:
Ten patients (0.5%) underwent surgery related to STC (total colectomy in most cases); cumulative probability of surgery was 0.8% at 10 years.
