Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) have been linked to a heightened risk for type 2 diabetes (T2D) in adults. To see whether this link is present in children, researchers examined claims data on almost 1.6 million patients (mean age, 15) in public and private insurance databases.
Each patient starting a new prescription for an SSRI was compared with two medically matched patients not taking antidepressants. In intent-to-treat analyses restricted to publicly insured children and controlling for baseline medical factors, children taking SSRIs had a 13% greater risk for developing T2D than untreated children beginning a year after treatment started.
