In a post hoc analysis of the ELITE trial (NEJM JW Womens Health May 2016 and N Engl J Med 2016; 374:1221), investigators explored the factors that influence circulating estradiol concentration. In the original study, 275 women who received oral micronized estradiol (1 mg daily) contributed >2000 measurements of serum estradiol over a median follow-up of 4.8 years. Mean estradiol concentrations were 11 pg/mL at baseline and 56 pg/mL while receiving treatment.
Median estradiol levels were significantly higher in women who consumed >2 alcoholic drinks daily than in those who did not drink (95 pg/mL vs. 46 pg/mL). Compared with never-smokers, current smokers had significantly lower estradiol (50 pg/mL vs. 26 pg/mL). Estradiol levels rose with i…
