Although cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) is relatively uncommon, clinicians must be vigilant because the venous neuroimaging needed to make the diagnosis and the anticoagulation typically applied for treatment are somewhat distinct and specific to this condition. The incidence of CVT has typically skewed toward younger, especially female patients, and associations with oral contraceptive use, infection, and malignancy have been previously described. Now investigators have characterized recent trends in the epidemiology of CVT based on hospital administrative data.
