Improvement in psychosocial functioning (e.g., home management, performance at work, participation in social activities) is a central goal of treatment for major depressive disorder (MDD). Previous studies have found decreased psychosocial functioning to persist despite symptomatic recovery after a depressive episode. The present researchers hypothesized that patients with remitted depression would show continuous improvement in psychosocial functioning over the course of 1 year and so examined the relationship between depression recurrence and psychosocial deficits in a longitudinal, multicenter study.
