With the COVID-19 pandemic, considerable attention has been paid to the swift rise of telepsychiatry (see NEJM JW Psychiatry Sep 2020 and JMIR Ment Health 2020; 7:e21108). Issues specific to the practice of psychotherapy bear particular consideration. These authors reviewed evidence on the remote practice of psychotherapy and described practical concerns.
The authors found that research into telepsychotherapy was limited and of variable quality, but encouraging overall; most systematic studies focused on cognitive-behavioral therapy. Although insurance plans have paid for remote synchronous videotherapy, little evidence existed to indicate its superiority to audio-alone therapy via telephone.
