Worldwide, between 70% and 100% of older adults are infected with cytomegalovirus (CMV). While the morbidity and mortality associated with CMV infections in immunocompromised patients are well established, the effect of latent infection among immunocompetent persons is unknown. Recently, linkages between CMV infection and cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and overall mortality have been reported. However, these associations were likely confounded by differences among groups.
