Various approaches are available for postoperative rehabilitation after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). In this randomized trial that involved 363 TKA patients (mean age, 64; mean body-mass index, 32 kg/m2), investigators in Baltimore compared the effectiveness of four rehabilitation approaches: (1) recumbent bicycle, (2) body-weight–adjustable treadmill, (3) electrical neuromuscular stimulation, or (4) treadmill plus neuromuscular stimulation.
Participants received two or three 1-hour sessions weekly for 8 to 12 weeks. At 60 days, after each patient had received 14 or 15 sessions, validated functional assessments and 6-minute walk test were performed.
