What Is the Impact of Cystic Fibrosis on Pregnancy Outcomes?

Maternal cystic fibrosis was associated with excess risk for pregestational and gestational diabetes and preterm birth.

Investigators studied the impact of cystic fibrosis (CF) on pregnancy outcomes in a cohort of 71 women (mean age, 28; mean body-mass index, 23 kg/m²) residing in the U.K. At the first prenatal visit, in addition to CF, the women had high rates of pancreatic insufficiency (49%), pregestational diabetes (32%), and biliary disease (14%). An additional 36% developed gestational diabetes, but only 5% developed preeclampsia. Mean forced expiratory volume in 1 minute (FEV₁) was 72% of predicted.
