Given the marked and progressive increase in COVID-19 disease severity with age in individuals older than 50 years, it is important that SARS-CoV-2 vaccines be safe and effective in this population. In a phase I dose-escalation trial supported by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and industry, investigators have now tested two doses of the SARS-CoV-2 mRNA-1273 candidate vaccine (25 µg or 100 µg) in 40 participants older than 55 years (20 age 56–70 years, 20 age >71 years; mean age, 69 years).
