Statins are the cornerstone for preventing and treating atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), but they remain widely underused in real-world settings. Interventions based on electronic health records (EHRs) are increasingly popular ways to alert clinicians to practice guidelines. In this study (NCT03271931), investigators randomized cardiologists at 16 practices in a single health system to three interventions over 6 months: active, forced-choice alert (interrupting the clinicians' workflow and asking them to accept or decline guideline-directed statin therapy); passive, noninterruptive alert (cardiologists chose to navigate to the advice); or the control (no intervention, although control cardiologists were aware of the study).
