Identifying children at risk for multisystem inflammatory disorder (MIS-C) associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection has been a concern for pediatricians, given the many children with febrile illnesses. In a retrospective case-control study, researchers at a New York City medical center compared clinical features between 44 children with MIS-C who received inpatient treatment with intravenous immunoglobulin and corticosteroids and 181 febrile outpatients (mostly telehealth visits).
Median age was 8.2 years for MIS-C patients, compared with 5.0 years for 158 outpatients seen in the clinic (or by telehealth) and 2.2 years for 23 controls seen in the emergency department. Half of patients were Hispanic. COVID-19 exposure was reported in 57% of MIS-C…
